Where the Anatolian Shepherd came from

The Anatolian Shepherd comes from the central plateau of Anatolia in Turkey. Their ancestors guarded flocks there for centuries in a hard, dry land.

Shepherds chose dogs that were big, fast enough to chase off predators and independent. The dogs lived with the flock and decided for themselves.

In 1967 a US Navy lieutenant named Robert Ballard, stationed in Turkey, got two guardian dogs, and their first US litter came in 1970. The AKC recognized the breed in 1996. They are still used to guard livestock.
