Where the Australian Kelpie came from

The Kelpie was developed in Australia in the 1800s. Sheep ranchers needed a tough dog that could work big flocks in heat and rough country. The first dog known as a Kelpie was a black and tan pup, born of working collies at Worrock Station on the Glenelg River in Victoria. A man named Jack Gleeson got the pup around 1872 and named the pup Kelpie.

The name comes from the kelpie, a water spirit in Celtic folklore. Kelpie's pup, called King's Kelpie, did so well at the first sheepdog trial at Forbes, New South Wales, that the breed took the name. Kelpies are known for stamina and for jumping onto a packed flock and running across the sheep's backs to break up a jam.

Working Kelpies are registered with the Working Kelpie Council in Australia, while show Kelpies are registered with the Australian National Kennel Council. They became a mainstay on big Australian stations. Today they still work on ranches and are popular in herding trials and dog sports.

The job a Australian Kelpie was bred for

The job was moving big mobs of sheep, all day, in heat. That shaped a dog with huge energy, quick thinking and a strong need to work. At home they are tireless and need real exercise and a job.

Sports that fit a Australian Kelpie

  • Herding. The breed's original work
  • Agility. Fast, athletic and eager
  • Flyball. They love speed and retrieving
  • Disc. Great stamina and chase drive
  • Scent work. Gives their mind a job

Training tips for a Australian Kelpie

  • Plan more than walks. Add scent games, tricks and training every day.
  • Reward calm behavior so energy does not turn into nonstop motion.
  • Teach a strong settle on a mat.
  • Use positive training. They learn quickly and can pick up bad habits just as fast.

Body and health

They handle heat better than many breeds but still need water and rest. Warm up before hard exercise.

Fun fact. A Kelpie's signature move is to jump onto a packed flock and run across the sheep's backs to the other side.

Breed is where we start

A study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains only about 9 percent of the differences in behavior between dogs (Morrill and others, Science, 2022). So your Australian Kelpie is a starting guess, not a label. We find the drive your dog actually runs on, give it a job, and teach you to read them.
