Where the Belgian Malinois came from

The Belgian Malinois comes from the area around Mechelen, Belgium, called Malines in French. It is one of four Belgian sheepdog varieties, sorted by coat type. A Belgian shepherd club formed in 1891 to save and define the type, and the varieties were sorted out in the 1890s.

Belgian shepherds herded sheep and guarded farms. Over time the Malinois, with a short coat and high drive, proved very good at police work and protection.

The AKC recognized the Malinois in 1959. Today they serve with police, military and detection teams, and compete in sports, but they are a lot of dog for most homes.

The job a Belgian Malinois was bred for

The dogs herded and guarded flocks, covering ground fast and responding to quick signals. At home that means huge energy, intense focus on their person and a tendency to grab and mouth things.

Sports that fit a Belgian Malinois

  • IGP. Built for the work and drive
  • Scent work. A good outlet for a driven nose
  • Agility. Fast and keen
  • Obedience. Very responsive to a handler
  • Disc. Chase drive and athleticism

Training tips for a Belgian Malinois

  • Teach impulse control with simple games like wait for the toy.
  • Reward calm and settled behavior as much as work.
  • Use structured play for energy, not only long runs.
  • Start socialization early and keep it gentle and slow.

Body and health

Light and athletic, but hard jumping and repetitive ball chasing can strain a growing body. Heat needs watching.

Fun fact. The Malinois is named for the area around Mechelen, which is called Malines in French.

Breed is where we start

A study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains only about 9 percent of the differences in behavior between dogs (Morrill and others, Science, 2022). So your Belgian Malinois is a starting guess, not a label. We find the drive your dog actually runs on, give it a job, and teach you to read them.
