Where the Catahoula Leopard Dog came from

The Catahoula is an American breed named for Catahoula Parish in Louisiana. One account says French settlers began the line in the mid 1700s by crossing local dogs with Beaucerons. The exact mix is not well recorded.

They were used to hunt feral hogs in swamps and brush, and to bay them, which means to hold the animals in place until the hunter arrived. They also worked cattle, trailed scent and treed game. A dog that could work all day in rough, wet country was worth a lot.

Louisiana named the Catahoula its state dog on July 9, 1979. The United Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1995, and the AKC added it to its Foundation Stock Service in 1996. Today they still work on ranches, and many also live as active family dogs.

The job a Catahoula Leopard Dog was bred for

The job was finding and holding stock in swamp and brush. That shaped an independent, driven, athletic dog who thinks for themselves. At home they need busy days and clear rules.

Training tips for a Catahoula Leopard Dog

  • Give a job daily. A bored Catahoula invents their own.

  • Use positive training and stay consistent. They are smart and independent.
  • Practice a reliable recall in safe spaces.

Body and health

Dogs with mostly white or blue eyed coats may have hearing or vision issues. They are athletic and generally sturdy.

Fun fact. Catahoulas can have blue, brown, green or amber eyes, and any eye color is allowed. Their leopard-like look comes from the merle gene.

Breed is where we start

A study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains only about 9 percent of the differences in behavior between dogs (Morrill and others, Science, 2022). So your Catahoula Leopard Dog is a starting guess, not a label. We find the drive your dog actually runs on, give it a job, and teach you to read them.
