Where the Dalmatian came from
The Dalmatian's origins are uncertain. One theory ties the name to Dalmatia, a region of Croatia, but the AKC says the breed did not originate there. The earliest known written reference dates to 1375. The breed was developed largely in England.
Their affinity for horses led to use as carriage dogs. Some ran beneath the axles, and others trotted alongside, behind or in front of coaches. They also ran ahead of horse-drawn fire engines to clear pedestrians, and guarded and calmed the horses. In the United States they kept a place in firehouses long after horses were replaced by trucks.
The AKC recognized the Dalmatian in 1888. Dodie Smith's 1956 novel 101 Dalmatians and Disney's 1961 film made them famous, and many were later abandoned after a surge in popularity.

Breed is where we start
A study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains only about 9 percent of the differences in behavior between dogs (Morrill and others, Science, 2022). So your Dalmatian is a starting guess, not a label. We find the drive your dog actually runs on, give it a job, and teach you to read them.
