Where the Miniature Schnauzer came from
The Miniature Schnauzer comes from Germany in the late 1800s. Farmers there probably used the smallest Standard Schnauzers, and may have crossed them with smaller breeds such as the Affenpinscher, Miniature Pinscher or Poodle. It was used to keep rats down and to watch the farm.
The earliest record of a Miniature Schnauzer in a dog show is from 1899 in Germany. Breeders kept the wiry coat and bearded face, along with the small size.
The AKC recognized the breed in 1926. Today they are among the most common small family dogs in the United States.

The job a Miniature Schnauzer was bred for
The work was patrolling the farmyard, killing rats and barking when something was wrong. The dog needed to be alert, quick and loud. At home that means a dog who barks at sounds, loves people, and has a lot of energy.
Sports that fit a Miniature Schnauzer
- Scent work. A good way for a busy mind to work.
- Agility. Quick and eager.
- Barn hunt. Their ratting instinct is a good fit.
- Rally. Good for building focus.
- Trick dog. They are smart and love to show off.
Training tips for a Miniature Schnauzer
- Teach quiet on cue. Reward them when they stop barking.
- Practice calm greetings, because they get excited with visitors.
- Use short sessions with treats. They learn fast and like games.
- Start grooming early and make it pleasant.
Body and health
Watch weight, as they put it on easily. Ask a vet about pancreatitis and bladder stones, which are common in the breed.
Fun fact. The Miniature Schnauzer is in the Terrier Group because of its rat-catching job, but it has no British terrier blood, which makes it unusual among AKC terriers.
Breed is where we start
A study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains only about 9 percent of the differences in behavior between dogs (Morrill and others, Science, 2022). So your Miniature Schnauzer is a starting guess, not a label. We find the drive your dog actually runs on, give it a job, and teach you to read them.
