Where the Standard Poodle came from
The Standard Poodle began as a water retriever, most likely in Germany, though some say France. The name comes from a German word, Pudel, which comes from a word meaning to splash.
Poodles were used to retrieve ducks from water, and the well known haircut is said to come from a swimming cut that kept the dog light in the water while covering the joints and chest. The breed later became a favorite in France and across Europe.
The AKC recognized the Poodle in 1887. Today Standard Poodles are family dogs and sport dogs.

Body and health
Deep chested, so bloat is a risk. Avoid heavy exercise after meals.
Fun fact. In Stanley Coren's dog intelligence rankings, which measure how well dogs learn and obey, the Poodle came in second, just behind the Border Collie.
Breed is where we start
A study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains only about 9 percent of the differences in behavior between dogs (Morrill and others, Science, 2022). So your Standard Poodle is a starting guess, not a label. We find the drive your dog actually runs on, give it a job, and teach you to read them.
