Understanding Your Dog

WHY YOUR DOG DOES WHAT THEY DO

You know something is off with your dog. Maybe they lose it every time they see another dog on leash. Maybe they cower in new places. Maybe they ignore you the moment anything interesting enters their environment. Maybe walks feel like a crisis, every single time.

You have probably Googled it. You have probably tried some things. And you have probably noticed that the advice is either too generic to be useful — "use high-value treats!" — or too alarming — "this could be aggression."

Here is the thing: most dog behavior problems come from a small set of underlying patterns. And once you understand which pattern your dog is showing, the path forward becomes much clearer.

That is what the dog behavior quiz is for.

WHAT THE DOG
BEHAVIOR QUIZ TELLS YOU

The quiz identifies your dog's behavior type based on how their nervous system is responding to their environment. It is not a diagnosis. It is a pattern. And patterns point to solutions.

After two minutes of questions, you will get:

  • Your dog's behavior type — with a clear explanation of what drives it
  • Why the behavior is happening, not just what the behavior is
  • Where to focus your energy first
  • A recommended next step specific to your dog's pattern

It is free, it takes two minutes, and it cuts through a lot of noise.

"Most training fails not because owners do not try hard enough, but because they are solving the wrong problem. The quiz helps you find the right one."

THE 5 DOG
BEHAVIOR TYPES

After working with hundreds of Treasure Valley dogs, we have identified five primary behavior patterns. Every dog is an individual, but most fall recognizably into one of these categories. Understanding which one matches your dog changes how you approach training entirely.

Behavior Type 01

The Overwhelmed Dog

The nervous system is running hot. Everything is too much. These dogs are not bad — they are flooded. Their threshold is low and their recovery is slow.

  • Reacts to multiple triggers unpredictably
  • Hard to settle even at home
  • Training works sometimes but not consistently
  • Gets worse in busy or novel environments
Behavior Type 02

The Overexcited Dog

High arousal, big energy, hard to redirect. These dogs are not anxious — they are over-stimulated. The issue is arousal regulation, not fear.

  • Pulls hard on leash toward everything
  • Jumps, mouths, struggles to settle
  • Fine one-on-one but falls apart in groups
  • Responsive to training when calm, ignores it when not
Behavior Type 03

The Confused Dog

Not enough structure, not enough clarity. These dogs are not defiant — they are operating without a clear framework. They do not know what the rules are.

  • Inconsistent responses to known commands
  • Responds to food but not reliably in real life
  • Behavior varies based on who is handling them
  • Good days and bad days with no clear pattern
Behavior Type 04

The Fearful Dog

Fear-based behavior — reactive, shutdown, or both. These dogs need safety before anything else. Pushing past their threshold makes things worse, not better.

  • Cowers, hides, or freezes in new environments
  • Barks or snaps when cornered or pressured
  • Has specific triggers that cause shutdown
  • History of difficult experiences or poor socialization
Behavior Type 05

The Under-Fulfilled Dog

Not enough mental or physical outlet. These dogs are not difficult — they are bored. Their behavior problems are a symptom of unmet needs, not a training failure.

  • Destructive behavior at home
  • Excessive barking or attention-seeking
  • Seemingly tireless energy that is never satisfied
  • Responds well when given a job or challenge

WHY BEHAVIOR TYPE
MATTERS FOR TRAINING

Here is why identifying your dog's behavior type changes everything: the training approach for an overwhelmed dog is completely different from the approach for an overexcited dog. Both might look the same on the surface — both might lunge on leash, both might ignore you at the park — but the cause is different, and the solution has to match the cause.

An overwhelmed dog needs nervous system regulation before any skill work. An overexcited dog needs arousal management and clearer engagement patterns. A confused dog needs consistency and structure. A fearful dog needs safety and patient desensitization. An under-fulfilled dog needs a job.

Apply the wrong approach and you either make no progress or make things worse. Apply the right one and you start to see change within sessions.

This is why we built the quiz. Not to give you a label — to give you a direction.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER
YOU TAKE THE QUIZ?

After you complete the quiz, you will get a results page that explains your dog's behavior type, what is driving it, and a recommended next step. That might be a specific program we offer, a resource to read, or a recommendation to book a consultation.

The results also go to your inbox so you can refer back to them. And they help us — if you end up booking a consultation, your quiz results give us a head start on understanding your dog before we ever meet.

No pressure. No sales pitch built into the quiz itself. Just an honest read on your dog's pattern and a direction to point you.

WHAT IF MY DOG
IS A MIX OF TYPES?

Most dogs are. The behavior types are not rigid buckets — they are patterns, and dogs can show elements of several at once. An overwhelmed dog might also be under-fulfilled. A fearful dog might have high arousal layered on top of the fear.

The quiz identifies your dog's primary pattern — the one that is driving the most significant behavioral challenges. Starting with that pattern gives you the highest-leverage entry point. You can layer in the nuances from there.

If you genuinely cannot figure out which type fits your dog best after taking the quiz, that is a strong signal that a consultation is the right next step. We can assess your dog in person and give you a precise picture of what is happening and why.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Your dog is not broken. They are not bad. They are operating from a nervous system state that is driving their behavior in a specific direction. Once you understand that direction, you can start working with it instead of against it.

The quiz is the fastest way to understand that direction. Take it, read your results, and see if it matches what you have been observing. Most dog owners tell us the results describe their dog almost exactly.

And if you want to go further — if you want a real assessment from a trainer who will look at your specific dog and tell you exactly what they see — book a consultation. We work with dogs throughout the Treasure Valley and we will give you an honest picture of what is driving the behavior and what to do about it.
