Advanced Odor Detection is a 6-week class that takes your dog's detection skills into the real world: vehicles, interiors, exteriors, and everything in between.
Once a dog has learned to find birch oil in familiar box setups, there is a real temptation to keep doing what works.
The hides get a little harder. The boxes get rearranged. But the environment stays the same. The problem is that detection work only becomes truly reliable when the dog has learned to work across environments they have never seen before, under conditions they cannot predict.

Advanced Odor Detection takes everything your dog built in Intro to Scent Work and Intro to Odor and applies it to the search scenarios used in AKC Nose Work competition and real-world detection: exterior searches, vehicle searches, and interior searches.
Wind, distractions, multiple hides, inaccessible hides. Your dog will work through all of it. You will learn to read your dog across environments that are genuinely unpredictable, which is where a detection dog actually earns their reputation.
Advanced Odor Detection is a standalone group class. You sign up for the class on its own, with no ongoing commitment required.

Scent is a cloud, not a dot.
Odor is made of tiny particles that evaporate off a source and drift into the air. Trainers call them VOCs, volatile organic compounds. Your dog is not smelling the object. They are smelling the cloud around it.
That cloud spreads out like a cone. It is strong at the source and faint at the edges. Watch your dog work the edges inward until they hit the strongest spot.
Air is invisible water
Odor drifts with the air, swirls around corners and gets trapped in pockets. Cool air sinks and pools in low spots. Warm air carries it up.
Weather changes the search
Temperature and humidity change how far and how fast odor travels. The same hide can smell different at noon than at dusk.
Sniffing regulates.
Every dog needs a job. Obedience manages behavior on the surface. Scent work reaches the nervous system underneath it. Slow, focused sniffing lowers a dog's heart rate and moves them out of fight or flight into a calm, focused state.
