Where the Cairn Terrier came from

The Cairn Terrier comes from the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye. They were small working terriers that bolted vermin out of rock piles called cairns, which is where the name comes from.

Before the breed had its own name, these dogs were shown as short haired Skye Terriers. After concerns from the Skye Terrier club, the name Cairn Terrier was chosen. The Kennel Club in the UK gave the breed its own register in 1912, and the AKC recognized them in 1913.

Cairns became well known worldwide in 1939, when a Cairn named Terry played Toto in the film The Wizard of Oz. Today they are cheerful, busy family dogs with a big personality in a small body.

The job a Cairn Terrier was bred for

A small terrier that worked in rocky ground, pushing into gaps in the stones to flush out foxes and rats. That is why Cairns dig, chase, bark at movement and love to go into holes and under things.

What you may see at home

Busy, digs, barks at movement, chases small animals.

Give them: Dig box, barn hunt, scent work, and quick training games.

Sports that fit a Cairn Terrier

  • Earthdog. The breed was made for tunnel work like this
  • Barn hunt. Lets them hunt rats in a safe way
  • Agility. Quick, bouncy and eager, in a small package
  • Rally. Fun for a dog that likes to work with their person
  • Scent work. Uses the nose and burns brain energy

Training tips for a Cairn Terrier

  • Use quick, happy training with small treats. Cairns are smart but can get bored fast.
  • Teach a strong recall in a fenced area first, because they will chase small animals.
  • Give a dig box so the yard stays in one piece.
  • Reward quiet after a bark so alert barking does not turn into constant barking.

Body and health

A small, hardy dog with a harsh outer coat and a soft undercoat. It needs brushing and occasional hand stripping or trimming. Keep weight in check, since extra weight is hard on a small frame.

Fun fact. A Cairn Terrier named Terry played Toto in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, and the dog was later credited under the name Toto.

Breed is where we start

A study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains only about 9 percent of the differences in behavior between dogs (Morrill and others, Science, 2022). So your Cairn Terrier is a starting guess, not a label. We find the drive your dog actually runs on, give it a job, and teach you to read them.
